.almost 5 years agoLeduc County Seniors Animal Assisted Therapy Program by: Tammy
At Family Counselling Centres we offer a unique form of counselling: Animal Assisted Therapy. Our approach is supported by evidence-based research that demonstrates that working with animals leads to increased physiological, emotional, and psychological well-being including an increase in self-esteem, self-awareness, empathy, concentration/focus, communication skills, and pro-social behaviours; and reduction in stress/anxiety, depression, anti-social behaviours, and trauma symptoms. We have had great success offering counselling to seniors, but due to the stigma that comes with mental health for this particular demographic we have struggled getting seniors to apply for individual counselling. Funding is available through such organizations as Family Community supports Services (Leduc County) but we find seniors do not attempt to access the funding. We are hoping to fund a "group" that focusses on interactions with therapy animals and provide a social setting with training professionals to help seniors process feelings of loneliness, isolation, and helplessness that many struggle with. Furthermore, many seniors were raised in rural settings, so participating in a group based in such a rural, agriculture-based setting would foster a sense of familiarity. WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR YOUR BIG IDEA? We want seniors to feel connected, experience a sense of belonging, and significance as they work with our counsellors/interns and therapy animals. WHO DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT THE MOST WITH YOUR IDEA? Seniors in the County of Leduc; ages ~65+ HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO IMPLEMENT? We can launch this group in Fall of 2019; offering a weekly 90 min group to seniors out of "Mystic Meadows Equine Centre" where Family Counselling Centres provides their Equine Assisted Counselling program (we also utilize goats, canines, cats, and donkeys in our program, in addition to horses). WHAT AREAS OF EXPERTISE WOULD BE HELPFUL IN SUPPORTING YOUR PROJECT? We have professionals on our team who are well trained in this field. We will likely need to partner with a county program to help recruit attendees and access transportation GIVE A BREAKDOWN OF HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOUR IDEA WILL COST. 1. Facility Access: $1000 2. Therapist Cost: $1000 (possibly pro-bono if funds are not secured through our internship program) 3. Transportation: $800-$100 WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE? https://familycounsellingcentres.com/equine-assisted-therapy/ THERAPISTS: Breanna Alton, R.Prov. Psychologist; Cierra Chmiliar, R.Prov. Psychologist; Tammy Schamuhn, R.Psychologist MYSTIC MEADOWS EQUINE CENTRE (Sandy Roy) http://www.mysticmeadowsequine.ca/ Sandy has experience bringing in many of her animals into seniors homes as a volunteer project of her own, and is enthusiastic to help us get this project launched! We also hold a contract with FCSS LEDUC COUNTY that may be able to help fund attendees who are willing to engage in an intake (although this has been a barrier for us in the past with the mental health stigma). HAVE YOU OR COULD YOU PARTNER/COLLABORATE WITH OTHER GROUPS TO MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN? See above for partnerships. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR IDEA NEEDED MORE FUNDING TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH? We would contact Leduc County FCSS and look at partnering with Seniors Centres as cited above. We also have the ability to run this program with Masters-Level interns should we ONLY* secure funding through this grant. WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY? At Family Counselling Centres we have dedicated our business to making a difference in the lives of others; emotionally and psychologically. We offer not only offer private counselling, but have partnered with a variety of organizations and non-profits to ensure our agency can provide psychological services to the greater Leduc area, regardless* of income.
49.almost 5 years agoHoedown for the Hungry - a Barn Dance in aid of the Leduc & District Food Bank by: Tom
The Leduc Square Dance club wants to become more involved in the community. Last year, we began an initiative called "Hoedown for the Hungry" for the Leduc & District Food Bank. It's a chance for people in Leduc & area to come for some old-time fun, to enjoy basic square dancing, line dancing, social dancing, etc. at an old-fashioned "barn burner". All proceeds were donated to the Food Bank. WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR YOUR BIG IDEA? There are two goals. The first is to sponsor a successful event to support the food bank. We'd like to hit at least $2000 in food and funds. The second goal is to "build the brand" of our club, to increase public awareness of our activity and the fun and friendship of modern square dancing. WHO DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT THE MOST WITH YOUR IDEA? Our recreational activity is aimed at residents of the City and County of Leduc. The main target population is "empty nesters", but we welcome dancers from 10 or 12 years and up, because square dancing is a great family activity. We've had an excellent response from younger singles. For example, two twenty-somethings came to last year's Hoedown, had a good time, and joined the club. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO IMPLEMENT? Launch is about now, when we start planning for promotion. The target date is Sept. 7 (but some scheduling conflicts may change that to Sept. 14, and we need to resolve this ASAP). The flight ends right after the Hoedown when goods and money are delivered to the Food Bank. This gives us about 3.5 months to get it all organized and done. WHAT AREAS OF EXPERTISE WOULD BE HELPFUL IN SUPPORTING YOUR PROJECT? We could use some marketing support - someone knowledgeable about the best ways to promote a project of this type. We did our best last fall but the results weren't what we had hoped. We believe that bad weather was a factor last year, and bad signage to the venue. We can't control the first but can certainly take control of the second. GIVE A BREAKDOWN OF HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOUR IDEA WILL COST? Hall rental: $350, caller: $200, plus signage and promotion. WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE? We do have some budget in place for promotion, and the people who ran last year's event are still around and willing to work on this year's Hoedown. HAVE YOU OR COULD YOU PARTNER OR COLLABORATE WITH OTHER GROUPS TO MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN? We've approached the Lions club about selling food at the event, with the proceeds going to the Food Bank. They're interested, but we still need to confirm and work out the details. We'd like some backing and support from 93.1 FM and the Rep but don't know how to approach them (we have limited funds for paid media advertising). We'd like to get the City of Leduc onside, but aren't sure how or whom to approach. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR IDEA NEEDED MORE FUNDING TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH? I don't think we need much in the way of financing (though it would help) so much as we need guidance and support, assistance for liaison with other groups, and suggestions to how we can build and vitalize this event. WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY? People hit with hard times need economical activities. Children and teens need safe, fun things to do. Everybody can benefit from being more active and getting more exercise. Modern square dance is an exciting, fun activity that combines music, exercise, and socializing. It's not the "hillbilly" or "hick" version most people think of based on their experience decades ago in school or on old movies and cartoons. We have a wonderful recreational product that we want to share -- a low-cost family activity suitable for almost all ages. Come on, Leduc -- get up on the floor and dance!
8.almost 5 years agoLifeline SOS (Series of Sessions) by: Amber
To create a program for teens and adults that equip them with important life skills that are often not taught thoroughly in schools. Lifeline sessions would be run to include a variety of topics including: -budgeting -saving & investing (types of investment streams) -debt & credit scores -mortgages & renting (The real cost of living. Real world examples of mortgage prices and property taxes so they can see what it costs) -interview skills (prep & interviewing) -resume writing -how to be a good employee -taxes -banking (options & comparing banks, writing cheques, differences between chequing and saving accounts) -critical thinking, stress management and emotional coping skills -career coaching (what kind of jobs are out there, what they pay, and the education paths to get there.) -meal planning & nutrition, how to grocery shop, cook -basic vehicle maintenance (checking oil, tire pressure, changing a tire, changing windshield wipers, headlights etc) -what to do if you get pulled over - or arrested -insurance basics (house, auto, life, disability, credit, sickness) -goal setting -health management (doctors appointments, various medical options if you're sick) WHO DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT MOST WITH YOUR IDEA? Teens and young adults. WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR YOUR BIG IDEA? To support our community with important life skills that people often feel lacking in but are also sometimes taboo or hard to talk about subjects. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO IMPLEMENT? Total time 1 year to "full take off" create and roll out all the programs but we will start small with a few sessions, market them, tweak and continue to build our network of session facilitators and experts. The long term goal would be to get highly interactive and engaging sessions into the Black Gold and STAR school board system. WHAT AREAS OF EXPERTISE WOULD BE HELPFUL IN SUPPORTING YOUR PROJECT? Any area experts and connections with people who would be willing to create and/or facilitate sessions. GIVE A BREAKDOWN OF HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOUR IDEA WILL COST? The cost will mainly be in hours to put each session content together and will vary on the subject matter. As an average we could assume 10 hours per session to build & tweak content( 10*$25/hour = $250 + $50 marketing + $25 for food and drinks + $50 room rental = $375/session WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE? Several connections with area experts. At this point the project is in the idea phase and only a few conversations have been about the need for this in our community. HAVE YOU OR COULD YOU PARTNER OR COLLABORATE WITH OTHER GROUPS TO MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN? Yes this will be critical to the success. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR IDEA NEEDED MORE FUNDING TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH? Look for corporate sponsors and ask session facilitators or writers to volunteer their time, talent and knowledge. WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY? We have an amazingly supportive community that I believe often just needs leadership and drive to get an idea going and see it through. I am passionate about seeing our community thrive in life and believe this idea will truly help our economy and the quality of workers, citizens, volunteers in our community. People just need cheer leading and some resources to help them be their best.
35.almost 5 years agoFrenchetvoila French & Math Tutoring by: Therese
Since moving to Leduc in 2016, I found a lack of French tutoring in the community. That encouraged me to act as a French tutor for my children. After more than 5 years of teaching, I noticed that parents and students who were learning in French language, especially in the English-speaking environment, are usually looking for help after schools’ hours. For all that reasons, as a native French speaker and certified teacher, me and my team, we decided to create Frenchetvoila; a is a privately owned and sophisticated language resource that offers educational tutoring services in French, to both children and adults alike. Our classes and tutoring sessions are primarily one-on-one and small group sizes with specialized focus on Language, Reading, Spelling and Mathematics. We tutor Math and French, for grades K-12 and also adults. WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR YOUR BIG IDEA? The main goal of my idea is to inspire and encourage the growth of a bilingual community where young students and adults can improve their skills in French. This means that learning French through our services Children in the City of Leduc will improve their academic performance and adults will develop their communication skills in both official languages; which will open new career and professional opportunities in addition to building relationships in both languages. WHO DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT THE MOST WITH YOUR IDEA? We would like to impact mostly the kids, because they are the future HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO IMPLEMENT? We already launched the idea, Frenchetvoila is 1 year old and already helped more than 15 kids and adults. We are looking to increase the number of people as well the quality of our tutoring. Right now we have an average of 8 people per Tutoring day and our goal is to have and maintain 15 people per tutoring day. WHAT AREAS OF EXPERTISE WOULD BE HELPFUL IN SUPPORTING YOUR PROJECT? It is difficult to find french resources that can support a personalized teaching, learning environment, that is why we have already drafted a reading and writing workbook for kids of all ages who want to learn French phonics, improve their vocabulary and their writing skills combine in one resource. Having an extra funds would help us edit, print that first workbook. GIVE A BREAKDOWN OF HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOUR IDEA WILL COST? Printing and editing is approximately $800 - $1200. HAVE YOU OR COULD YOU PARTNER OR COLLABORATE WITH OTHER GROUPS TO MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN? I have collaborated in the past with other private tutor, but I am open to collaborate with other tutoring companies which share the same vision WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR IDEA NEEDED MORE FUNDING TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH? The resources I already have in place are Business link, Leduc chamber of Commerce and my ongoing sharing with some other entrepreneurs. As far as my skills: I am a French-speaking native and certified educator, with over five years of teaching in a French Immersion school. I also have a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics and Technology from University (Quebec, Montreal) and a Bachelor of Education from Cape Breton University (Sydney, Nova Scotia). My capacity to teach has taken me across the country as I have learned and worked as an educator in three provinces. I really enjoys working with children and I have been fortunate to witness how teaching in French has been transformational in my students’ lives. I have aught both math and science in French and, as a mom of three, has taught on subjects beyond the scope of the classroom. HAVE YOU OR COULD YOU PARTNER OR COLLABORATE WITH OTHER GROUPS TO MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN? I have collaborated in the past with other private tutors, but I am open to collaborate with other tutoring companies which share the same vision WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY? Leduc is a fast growing community attracting multiple people with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In the past year Leduc has seen the increase of many kids enroll in Immersion Programs. We are looking forward to supporting the French Immersion program and the French-speakers in the community. We believe that speaking French and being bilingual opens many doors in different areas of life and on a professional level.

My idea is to do a preschool dance class in a nursing home where Seniors get to watch the preschoolers dance. WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR YOUR BIG IDEA? The goal is to stimulate enjoyment for the seniors while providing a bridge between the two generations. As well the goal for preschoolers is to encourage participation through dance that is both enjoyable and fun. WHO DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT THE MOST WITH YOUR IDEA?
